The former monastery church bears the name of St. Mary and Markus and is the oldest church on the island of Reichenau. It is located in Mittelzell and forms the center of the three churches. Over the years, the cathedral was continually expanded to accommodate 134 monks in the mid-9th century. As the cathedral stands today, it was consecrated in 1048 by Abbot Berno. Numerous reliquaries and other cultural objects from the 5th to the 18th centuries are on display in the cathedral’s treasury. In the garden behind the cathedral you will find Abbot Strabo’s herb garden.

Guided tours for individual travelers take place on Tuesdays at 5:00 p.m. from April to October.
